Welcome!
West Hobart has a long history as one of Hobart's oldest suburbs.
The earliest days of West Hobart saw a collection of simply constructed houses which housed workers from the city and ship building areas of Battery Point.
Historians will tell you that it consisted of a lot of hotels and brothels.
Reality suggests that a "hotel" consisted of a building where simple meals were served, where there was light and heat and where there was probably somebody who could read, to convey the contents of the local newspaper to those unable to read.
At the end of the evening, workers would retire to their own meagre cottage to rest in preparation for the next day's hard toil.
Brothels? Well, if the colony had been settled by male convict labour, after they had served their time and been released, it must have been a pretty lonely life for a single man. Maybe there were a few ladies to provide some comfort, to listen to and care for a lonely man.
Since those early days and simple beginnings, West Hobart has flourished and is now one of the most prized suburbs of our city.
